Mike McDaniel Pulls Out of Browns Head Coaching Race
After his tenure as head coach of the Miami Dolphins ended, Mike McDaniel has quickly found himself in the spotlight for various coaching opportunities. Known for his offensive expertise, McDaniel immediately became a hot candidate for offensive coordinator roles across the NFL. However, with multiple head coach vacancies, he has also pursued opportunities for top coaching positions.
To date, McDaniel has interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens. Additionally, he has explored offensive coordinator positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Detroit Lions.
However, ahead of a planned second interview with the Browns, McDaniel has decided to withdraw his name from consideration for their head coaching job. As reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, McDaniel informed Cleveland of his decision on Tuesday, just before the second interview was scheduled for Wednesday.
Why McDaniel Chose to Withdraw
McDaniel’s decision likely stems from the more appealing opportunities elsewhere. With several offensive coordinator offers reportedly on the table, McDaniel may find better prospects in cities with more promising quarterback situations. In Baltimore, McDaniel would have the chance to work with Lamar Jackson, a two-time league MVP, and a team with consistent playoff aspirations. The Ravens are also a Super Bowl-winning franchise with a strong foundation.
Meanwhile, the Raiders, although a team in need of a major rebuild, are set to select first overall in the upcoming NFL Draft, giving McDaniel the potential to coach a promising quarterback from the very beginning of their career. This could include a future star like Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, who led his team to a national championship victory over Miami.
On the other hand, the Browns are facing a more uncertain quarterback situation. With Deshaun Watson struggling to find his form, and questions surrounding other potential QB options like Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, McDaniel might feel less confident about Cleveland’s immediate future. Additionally, the Browns need to resolve salary cap issues ahead of the 2026 season, making the situation even more complex.
Even if McDaniel does not land a head coaching role in the near future, he could opt to take on an offensive coordinator position with teams like the Chargers, led by Justin Herbert, or the Lions, who feature quarterback Jared Goff. These positions could provide McDaniel with a chance to work with top-tier talent before re-entering the head coaching search in the future.
Conclusion
Given the options available to him, McDaniel’s decision to step away from the Browns’ search is understandable. With enticing opportunities in Baltimore, Las Vegas, and elsewhere, he seems poised to make the best move for his career going forward.
